Programme Structure

Bro Split

Shoulder training for a bro split programme

The bro split is a classic bodybuilding-style training structure where each muscle group gets its own dedicated day. It works well if you want a high-volume session focused on one area, with plenty of time for recovery before the next session.

What Is a Bro Split?

  • Day 1 is chest, Day 2 is back, Day 3 is shoulders, Day 4 is arms, and Day 5 is legs.
  • Each day gives you a clear focus, more exercise selection, and higher volume per muscle group.
  • Sessions don't have to be consecutive; add rest days in between to allow plenty of recovery.
  • Traditionally Mondays are chest days, but they really don't need to be. Make it work for you.
  • It suits lifters who enjoy a longer, more focused workout and can recover well between sessions.

Quality and volume are the keys to a good bro split. You still need progressive overload, clean reps, and enough recovery to keep your performance high. The split itself is just the framework.

This is a fairly high-volume version of the split. If you like the schedule but feel the workload is too much, scale the volume back.

How to Use the Bro Split

Not everyone needs five days. If you are a 4-day lifter, combine shoulders with arms. If you can only train twice a week, this split is probably not the best fit. The goal is to match the plan to your life.

Why It Works

The main advantage of a bro split is focus. Each muscle group gets dedicated attention and high volume, then plenty of rest. If your goal is maximising muscle growth and you have plenty of time, this could be the one for you.

Considerations

This split is best for lifters who enjoy longer, more focused sessions and can recover well between them. If you prefer shorter, more frequent sessions, a full-body or PPL setup may suit you better.

Progression Notes

  1. Keep most sets in the 6 to 12 rep range for strength and muscle growth.
  2. Choose loads that leave roughly one rep in the tank on your final set.
  3. When you can complete all sets at the top of the rep range with good form, add a little weight next week.
  4. If your performance dips, reduce the load slightly and aim for technique first.
