Dan's Favourite Fitness Apps

Using a phone to track training and daily habits

The easiest way to stay on top of your plan is to track it. These are the apps I use that make it quick and easy to do so.

My daily core stack

StrengthLog

StrengthLog is free (with a premium version available), easy to use and has great gamification to keep you engaged. It has built-in programmes for you to follow or create your own. I find it easiest just to copy a previous workout and adjust it for the day. Track reps, sets, and weights with ease.

MyNetDiary

For nutrition tracking, MyNetDiary is a free or low-cost option for logging food and keeping an eye on calories and protein. The free version allows you to track everything you need, but for a pretty low yearly price, you get some nice extras. The AI scanner really comes in handy when you're out for a meal and don't have the exact nutritional information.

Your phone's calendar

If it's not in the calendar, it is easy to forget. I use the calendar already on my phone to block out training, meal preparation, and recovery time, treating those commitments like any other appointment.

Low-effort alternatives

The above apps are relatively easy to use and low cost, but if you'd prefer something simpler:

  • Notes app: A simple checklist on your phone works for recording exercises, weights, or daily steps.
  • Pen and paper: A small gym notebook is a reliable, distraction-free way to track progress.
“The best app or system is the one you will actually use consistently. Pick whatever works for you.”
